IMS (Dry Needling)

What is IMS?

IMS (intramuscular stimulation) is a specific 'dry-needling' technique and total system for the diagnosis and treatment of persistent myofascial pain syndromes, including muscle, joint, tendon, bursal, fascial, neural and biomechanical problems.

The approach is based on a neuropathic model of musculoskeletal dysfunction in which angulation, stretch or compression of a nerve anywhere along its path, leads to nerve irritation and persistent tight bands of muscle, that cannot be relieved through stretching, exercise or traditional muscle release techniques. Over time, these tight bands (trigger points) may lead to joint compression and pain, degenerative changes, tendonitis and bursitis.

IMS involves the use of a thin, solid needle, similar to those used in acupuncture, inserted directly into the tight band of muscle in order to induce a muscle twitch and subsequent relaxation. Although the needle insertion should not be uncomfortable, when the needle enters a tight band you should feel a muscle 'grab' and deep ache that will decrease over the next few minutes. The needle is removed shortly after this 'twitch' is obtained, and the muscle continues to relax, long after the needle is removed.

Although the technique can be uncomfortable, and there may be some associated muscle soreness post treatment (similar to a deep-tissue massage), you should notice an increase in mobility and decrease in stiffness and pain almost immediately. It is recommended that IMS be followed by a period of rest to avoid re-aggravating the nervous system and tight muscle tissue. Once the persistent muscle tightness has been relieved and joint mobility is restored, you will be able to return to all exercises and activities as per usual.
